Michael Fiore
April 27, 1946-September 9, 1990
Born in New Rochelle, New York, Michael Fiore got his start in skating at the Westchester Figure Skating Club. He competed in the novice men's event at the 1965 U.S. Championships and after serving in the Vietnam War, finished fourth at the 1968 New England Championships. He turned professional in 1969 and became involved with the Ice Capades and taught skating in Rochester, New York and San Diego, California. He passed away on September 9, 1990 at the age of forty-four.
Michael's obituary from "The Standard Star": "Michael Fiore, a professional ice skater and a New Rochelle native, died of cancer Sunday at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Castle Point (N.Y.). He was 44. Mr. Fiore was born April 27, 1946, in New Rochelle to Anthony and Marie Blanco Fiore. He graduated from the New Rochelle High School in 1965 and from the American Art School in New York City. Mr. Fiore competed on the amateur level as a figure skater and, after graduating from high school, won the gold medal in the U.S. Figure Skating Association's national competition. Mr. Fiore was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Vietnam War. He was a seaman third class and received the National Defense Medal and the Vietnam Medal. After his discharge from the Navy in 1967, Mr. Fiore became a professional ice skater. He was a teacher and coach with the Ice Capades for about 10 years from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. He was a member of the U.S. Figure Skating Association and the Professional Skaters Guild. Mr. Fiore had lived in San Diego for the past 14 years. Before that he lived in Atlanta for four years. In New Rochelle, he was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church. He is survived by his mother of New Rochelle; two brothers, Anthony of Irvington and Dennis of Minneapolis; and a sister-in-law, Christa Fiore of Irvington."
