Historical Results From The South African Figure Skating Championships

In 1947, Arthur Apfel made history as the first and (to date) only South African born figure skater to win a medal at the World Championships. In the decades that followed, many South African skaters were unable to compete internationally due to IOC and ISU bans on the country due to the country's policy of apartheid. In the seventies, South Africa organized its first international invitational Skate Safari competitions and in the eighties, skaters from West Germany and Belgium competed in further such events. The "Official Yearbook of the Republic of South Africa" noted, "While South Africans have participated in various international competitions, participation has been limited in recent years, due to threatened disruption of these competitions by certain countries withdrawing should South Africans compete."

Through extensive research in the archives of the "Official Yearbook of the Republic of South Africa", back issues of "Skating", "Skating World" and "Ice Skating" magazine and assistance from Irvine Green, the long-time editor of "The Outside Edge" and "Ice Skating South Africa", I'm pleased to be able to present these incomplete historical results from the South African Championships.
