Historical Results From The Australian Figure Skating Championships

The National Ice Skating Association of Australia was founded in Melbourne in 1911, but for the first twenty years of its existence, it wasn't truly a national governing body. The NISAA's aim was “the furtherance of the art of skating with the view of attaining the highest proficiency amongst the skaters at the Glaciarium in Australia” and “further affiliation with the International Skating Union”.

Almost all of the NISAA's early Australian Championships exclusively featured skaters from Melbourne. The Sydney Figure Skating Club operated independently of the NISAA and organized its own events for skaters from New South Wales. An agreement was signed by the two organizations in 1931, and under the auspices of the Council of the National Skating Association of Australia, the country's National Championships became a truly national competition. An exception to this was in 1947, when Sydney skaters didn't participate due to difficulties surrounding the great coal strike.

A note regarding the early Championships... The Melbourne Glaciarium did not open for skating during the winter of 1920. "The Australasian” reported that “owing to the popularity of dancing, the building was converted into a Palais de Dance." The Glaciarium re-opened in May of 1921 and staged a lavish skating carnival the following month, but the Championships did not return until 1922.

Over the years, skaters from New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Ukraine and the United States have all competed at the Australian Championships.

Through extensive research in the newspaper archives of the National Library of Australia, Ice Skating Australia's records and partnership with theabsolutely brilliant Aussie skating historian Ross Carpenter, I'm thrilled to be able to share these comprehensive historical results from the Australian Championships.

*Reg Park did not skate to the standard (a mark of 4.0 from 2/3 of the judges) and was initially not awarded the Australian men's title as a result. The Association's Secretary pored through records and discovered the standard was actually a mark of 3.5 from 2/3 of the judges, which Reg achieved, and he was awarded the title.

**Adrian Swan and Ron Cook were the only entries in 1950 and 1951. Because neither failed to skate to the standard of marks either year, they were not awarded the titles.

***Tristan Thode of New Zealand won the men's event, but the title was awarded to the top Australian finisher Nicholas Fernandez.

*Ross Carpenter noted that Lydie Dunbar Hooper was born Lydia Leymann, in Switzerland. She moved to Australia at the age of fourteen in 1911 but was stranded in Australia due to The Great War. She changed her last to Dunbar Hooper after her uncle, a doctor.

**Tracey Damigella won the figures, short and long programs at the 1989 Australian Championships but was not awarded the national title because she was an invited guest skater from America.

***New Zealand's Alexandra Rout won the women's event, but the title was awarded to the top Australian finisher, Tina Wang of Queensland.

****Ukraine's Irina Movchan won the women's event, but the title was awarded to the top Australian finisher, Zara Pasfield of New South Wales.

SENIOR PAIRS

Prior to 1931, this event was often referred to as the “pair edge competition” and was open to both similar and mixed pairs. The first reference to the event being classed as a Championship was in 1912, when duos competed for prizes furnished by Victor von Wignbladh. The September 12, 1912 issue of "Punch magazine" noted, "They consisted of large, framed certificates, illuminated and carved by the donor with spaces for photographs of the winners. In addition to these were two medals, with the Southern Cross in diamonds. The medals are attached to broad bands on pins, the latter being retained by the winner. The medals, being the property of the association, are to be challenged each season."

WALTZING CONTESTS AT EARLY AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Waltzing competitions were usually held in conjunction with the N.I.S.A.A.'s Championship events, but they were sometimes held separately as a feature of carnivals at the Melbourne Glaciarium. In 1927, for instance, the waltzing competition was held in July as part of a fundraiser for the Melbourne Hospital fund. The winner was decided by a public vote.
